Can someone with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) use household appliances?
Yes. Most household appliances and items are safe to use as long as they are properly maintained and in good working order. This includes microwave ovens, major appliances, electric blankets, and heating pads. Most items can be used safely with just six inches (15 cm) of distance between the item and the ICD. Please read the device’s manual for a list of these items and the specific distances that they should be kept away from the ICD. One exception is an induction hob cooktop. These items emit a large amount of magnetic energy, but can be used safely by keeping two feet (60 cm) of distance between the ICD and the cooktop. Consult the ICD's manufacturer for additional information and recommendations.
