Can someone with an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) use power tools?
Most home power tools should not affect ICMs, or loop recorders. Someone with an ICM should keep handheld electric power tools and yard tools at least six inches (15 cm) away from their heart monitor. Gasoline-powered tools should be kept at least 12 inches away. Keep equipment in good working order to prevent electrical shocks. Make sure that plug-in tools are properly grounded or double-insulated. Using a ground fault interrupter (GFI) outlet is a good safety measure. There may be other safe distance recommendations for specific tools. They differ between 6–24 inches, depending on the strength of the tool. Consult the ICM device’s manufacturer for recommendations.
