How should implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients cope with anxiety surrounding receiving shocks?

Anxiety over the possibility of receiving a shock is normal. One way to help with that anxiety is to develop a shock plan with your doctor. This will help determine what you should do in the event of a shock. Most physicians recommend the following shock plan:

  1. If you receive one shock and feel fine, call your clinic at the next convenient time.
  2. If you are shocked and don't feel fine, or are shocked more than once in a 24-hour period, call your clinic immediately, or seek medical attention right away.

Talk to a doctor about any additional concerns or questions.
