How should implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients cope with anxiety surrounding receiving shocks?
Anxiety over the possibility of receiving a shock is normal. One way to help with that anxiety is to develop a shock plan with your doctor. This will help determine what you should do in the event of a shock. Most physicians recommend the following shock plan:
- If you receive one shock and feel fine, call your clinic at the next convenient time.
- If you are shocked and don't feel fine, or are shocked more than once in a 24-hour period, call your clinic immediately, or seek medical attention right away.
Talk to a doctor about any additional concerns or questions.
