Is someone with an insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) able to go through airport security?
Yes, given the short duration of security screening, it is unlikely that a metal detector — a handheld or walk-through one — or a full-body scanner would affect a cardiac monitor. A person who has an ICM or loop recorder should take the following precautions:
- Minimize the risk of interference by not touching any metal surfaces around the screening equipment.
- Do not stop or linger in the walk-through archway; walk through at a normal pace.
- If a handheld wand is used, ask the security operator not to hold it or wave it back and forth over your heart monitor.
- If the person with the ICM is concerned, they should show their cardiac monitor ID card to the security operator and ask them for an alternative screening method and follow their instructions.
