What’s the difference between an extravascular implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and a traditional, transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator?
With a traditional ICD, the device is placed under the skin in the upper chest while the lead is placed through a vein and sits inside the heart. An extravascular ICD is placed under the skin below the left armpit, and the lead is placed outside the heart and veins.
