DESCRIPTION

This 2-day course covers the key aspects of endoscopic skull base surgery. Lectures and discussions range from the role of surgery, pathologies, advancement in surgical technique, and surgical approaches.

Cadaveric dissection will allow surgeons to practice and update their knowledge of skull base anatomy and surgical approaches. Further interaction follows through case discussions. Dissection stations are equipped with powered instrumentation and navigation systems.

Participants include rhinologists and neurosurgeons interested in developing or advancing their skills in endoscopic approach to the skull base tumors and the reconstruction of skull base defects.

At the end of this course, participants will:

• Know the role of the frontal sinus in anterior endoscopic skull base surgery
• Understand pathologies in the lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus & in the sellar and suprasellar (cerebrospinal leaks, meningoencephalocele)
• Understand the benefits & limitations of advanced endoscopic surgery for the treatment of various pathologies ranging from tumor resection to the reconstruction of skull base defects
• Practice various approaches through cadaver dissection which may include prelacrimal approach and modified medial maxillectomy; transsellar, transplanum, transtuberculum approach; transpterygoid and infratemporal fossa; transclival approach; transcribiform approach
• Experience and understand clinical value of powered instrumentation and navigation system in endoscopic skull base surgery
