A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO HYPERTENSION

The Medtronic Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure (also known as the Blood Pressure Procedure) delivers energy to the nerves leading to the kidneys that help regulate blood pressure. This minimally invasive method may help achieve a sustained reduction in blood pressure. RDN also offers the opportunity to reduce blood pressure, independent of patient medication adherence.1

KIDNEYS ARE KEY

Kidneys are part of the body's blood pressure control mechanism. Overactivity of the nerves that travel to the kidneys can cause high blood pressure.3 These nerves can be down-regulated to help the kidneys better manage blood pressure.4

THE MEDTRONIC RENAL DENERVATION PROCEDURE

In the Medtronic RDN procedure, the Symplicity Spyral™ catheter is positioned in the renal arteries. Under the control of the radiofrequency generator, energy is delivered to ablate the surrounding nerves 360 degrees, to help control blood pressure.

STEP 1:

An interventional catheter (described to patients as a thin tube) is inserted into the renal arteries leading to the kidney.

STEP 2:

That catheter is kept in place for one minute at a time, delivering energy to help regulate the nerves.

STEP 3:

Typically, the interventional physician will decide to treat multiple portions of the renal artery.

STEP 4:

The procedure is performed in both kidneys.

STEP 5:

Following treatment, the catheter is removed and no permanent implant is left behind.
