Medtronic has had one or more facilities in the province of Limburg since 1969. In that year, the founder and former CEO of Medtronic, Earl Bakken, chose Kerkrade as the city for Europe's first facility and base for Medtronic's activities. Today, Medtronic is still well represented in the Netherlands.
The Dutch sales organization (Medtronic Trading NL B.V.) is located in Eindhoven. All Medtronic therapy groups are represented in this organization:
The total number of people working at Medtronic Trading NL equals approximately 230 employees.
The European Operations Center (EOC) in Heerlen hosts various functions, spread across two facilities. The EOC facility at the Trilandis business park houses Europe's Information Technology Service, the Financial Shared Service Center and Medtronic's largest international distribution facility for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). As of October 2017, a new distribution center of 33,000 m² has been added, ensuring that 15,000 hospitals and clinics in Europe can be reached within 24 hours. More than 1,000 people of about 15 nationalities work at Medtronic in Heerlen; this turns Medtronic into one of the largest employers in this region.
At the C-mill business park facility in Heerlen, the Service & Repair Center of Excellence is located, responsible for the end-to-end (corrective and preventive) servicing of small capital equipment for all Medtronic therapy groups. From December 2015 until October 2017, multiple service centers in Western Europe have been centralized in this location, resulting in a team of approximately 250 dedicated and motivated employees who are delivering a service of the highest possible standard to our customers.
Medtronic founded the Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht in 1987, starting with 45 employees, as a research facility. Especially clinical study activities have grown substantially, now ranging from small exploratory studies with one physician-investigator and just a few patients to multinational, randomized trials intended to demonstrate superior clinical and economical outcomes with new device therapies in hundreds, sometimes thousands of patients. The BRC nowadays also hosts the Benelux Therapy & Procedure Training Center, where advanced simulator training is offered to physicians, nurses and technicians. About 325 employees work at the Bakken Research Center.
This site hosts the European production facility of perfusion systems. Besides single products for heart valve and bypass surgery, such as oxygenators, reservoirs and tubing sets, also complete systems and customized solutions (custom packs) are manufactured here. Cardiac Surgery Operations also provides catheters for the placement of heart valves and products for minimally invasive heart surgery. As of 2018, Cardiac Surgery Operations in Kerkrade produces bone cement kits to be used for surgical procedures.
In addition to that, the new European Experience Center Kerkrade (EECK) is located here since November 2014. This center of excellence of Medtronic Perfusion/ECT provides a venue for discussions between the medtech industry and clinicians, and it delivers the most recent product and therapy information and training. About 200 employees work at the Cardiac Surgery Operations facility.
