What is it like to have a student job at Medtronic?

It’s only been a positive experience so far. I started at Medtronic 6 months ago, and from the start, I felt very welcomed and well looked after. What I like is the dynamics of my position, that I am working in an interesting context. I also like that Medtronic is a global company with many opportunities to go and work somewhere else in the world.

What do you do, and why is the job relevant for you?

Although accounting is part of my study program, it’s not my main focus area. Nevertheless, there are so many other qualitative skills that can be learned from my job. The work gives me an opportunity to gain experience and grow.

The job has given me good insights into the tasks of a Finance Department, the supply chain, our business processes and environment. I learn from all the interactions within our team and from working across country borders and departments – altogether, this helps me to better understand the big picture of a business.

How is it to juggle course work, student activities, personal and social lives – and then work as well?

For me it works as I am not easily stressed, especially not when it comes to my job. What makes it work is that I am good at time-management and prioritizing in my life. I am extremely well-structured when it comes to my own time.

In the past, I have pushed myself to the limits, and this has given me the skills to manage my time in a more effective way. There’s, for example no such thing as weekends off; I never watch TV and I prioritize my free time quite hard and there are many things that is not my priority right now. Most of my awake time, I spend on my studies, the job at Medtronic, and volunteer work that I do for the UN.

Although it is quite overwhelming, I really enjoy doing all these things. I get a lot of personal satisfaction by being active and gain experiences in life.

What would you say would be the NO1 reason to get a part time job while at study?

I really don’t see any obstacles. At the end of the day it will be worth it, because you learn a lot.

For me, a student job is really a must and I am convinced that this specific job will help me in my career going forward. An education alone will not provide me with the experience that I gain at Medtronic – so I say, just go for it!
