Senior Director,
Manufacturing & Operations
CRDM, AF Solutions
Kirkland, Canada

Describe a typical day in your position.

A typical day includes several meetings with my management team in Operations, my cross-functional peers, and/or external supply chain partners to help performance with our customers and patients. We spend a significant amount of time improving the quality of our products, and determining the best strategies to grow the business to meet increasing customer demand. Collaboration and teamwork are a part of every day, and are critical factors of success. As we improve, we make changes, and therefore managing change is also a big part of the role, particularly as it relates to human factors. Developing and motivating employees to embrace our dynamic environment and to help them see how they contribute to the Mission is very important.

Why do you enjoy working at Medtronic?

I enjoy working at Medtronic because I feel like I am making a strong contribution to society. I am proud to be part of a global company that exists to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life for patients all over the world. Medtronic has a diverse global workforce that is very talented, collaborative, and passionate about the Mission.

What do you love about your job?

I love knowing that we are making a difference in the lives of our patients. Every ten minutes of the working day, we make a catheter that will make one patient's life better, which positively affects that patient, along with their family and friends. When Medtronic shares an employee story with its employees, it is an extremely powerful motivator to know first-hand how you have affected people's lives.

What is challenging about your job?

The job is challenging because we have to solve difficult technical issues frequently, and we have to manage a dynamic global regulatory environment. Many issues require inputs from many different people, with different functional and/or geography responsibility.

What do you appreciate most about Medtronic?

Many companies have vision or mission statements portrayed on their walls and/or in their policy documents. At Medtronic, we LIVE the Mission, and it is very powerful to be a part of it and to embrace the Mission as your reason for working every day.

What are your greatest accomplishments?

Integrating an acquisition startup company with Medtronic, and achieving double-digit growth year-over-year for four consecutive years; including launching the Arctic Front Cryoballoon catheter in the U.S. and several other countries within that timeframe.

How do you give back?

I give back by volunteering in the local community as a coach for youth sports teams, and through our local church I am involved in helping support several missions such as bringing a refugee family to Canada, actively supporting fair trade, and contributing to local shelters for the homeless.

What advice would you give to job candidates?

Finding the right job that you love, and/or finding the right company that fits with your own personal goals, objectives, and mission is very important to finding happiness in your career.

What is your favorite quote?

"Leadership is the lifting of a man's vision to higher sights, the raising of a man's performance to a higher standard, the building of a man's personality beyond its normal limitations." – Peter F. Drucker

How do you balance your life?

I balance my life by making my wife and my three young girls my first priority, and staying healthy by playing sports such as hockey and softball.
