Raphael - Principal Regulatory Affairs Specialist - Spine

Principal Regulatory Affairs Specialist
Memphis, TN

Describe a typical day in your position.

As a regulatory affairs specialist, I work on cross-functional product development teams to help launch products to market. Once the targeted markets are identified, I work to determine the regulatory strategy and requirements to gain approval or clearance for each market. I am also responsible for writing and filing the regulatory submission in the United States and assisting our OUS counterparts by providing the required deliverables to register products in their geographies. When changes are made to products after they have been registered, I assess the changes for global regulatory impact.

Why do you enjoy working at Medtronic?

I enjoy that I work for a company that applies the latest advancements in technology to improve people's lives on a daily basis. Medtronic is truly a patient-focused company that lives up to its mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. Also, Medtronic's large portfolio of products and its large global presence allow for many opportunities to learn and grow all within the Medtronic family.

What do you appreciate most about Medtronic?

Medtronic promotes a patient- and customer-first attitude. But Medtronic is also focused on recruiting and retaining the best and the most diverse group of employees possible. One of the ways that Medtronic has shown this commitment is through the creation of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Professional Association Networks (PANs). Through these ERGs and PANs, Medtronic provides employees with opportunities for business and professional development, community outreach, and connecting with other employees with similar interests. These opportunities allow employees to continue to grow within Medtronic, while also showing Medtronic's commitment to diversity.

How do you give back?

Outside of Medtronic, I've tutored middle school math through the local school system and served for a year on the Shelby County School Board of Education. I also volunteer at the local annual Virginia Davis Walk/Run for Lupus and participate in several activities with the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis.

Medtronic also provides me with several ways to give back as well. Every year I participate in JA in a Day through Junior Achievement and MECCA to educate students at a local elementary school about business and economics. I also participate in Medtronic's Annual United Way Campaign by donating to a local nonprofit organization.

How do you balance your life?

When I'm not working, I enjoy spending as much time with my family as I can. I also enjoy traveling and attending baseball, football, and basketball games.

What do you love about your current location?

Memphis is a great city that is full of history, great music, and great food. While Memphis is known for being the home of Elvis Presley, B.B. King, and having the best barbecue in the world, Memphis is much more than that. Memphis has great museums such as the National Civil Rights Museum and the Pink Palace Museum. It is also the home to Shelby Farms, which is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, and the Memphis in May International Festival. It is also in a great location that is within driving distance to many other cities such as Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, and New Orleans.
