MEDTRONIC TO CO-SPONSOR TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN MILITARY HEROES

National Medal of Honor Convention will be held in Minnesota.

Minneapolis, Minn. – Feb. 18, 2016 - A convention paying tribute to America’s greatest military heroes will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., on October 4-8, 2016, and Medtronic will be among the local companies co-sponsoring the event.

The Medal of Honor Convention is an annual gathering of Medal of Honor recipients, recognized for their heroism with the nation’s highest and rarest award for military valor. In American history, only 3,496 people have ever received the Medal of Honor. There are only 77 living recipients of the award.

“We are humbled and honored to help bring this important event to Minnesota,” said Paul Harrington, Executive Sponsor of Medtronic’s Veteran Employee Resource Group (VERG). “We look forward to their visit and to helping honor all of America’s veterans.”

The convention will include five days of activities designed to help members of the community, including school children, to interact with some of America’s greatest heroes. The announcement took place at the Fair School in Crystal, Minn., where Medal of Honor recipient Thomas G. Kelley met with students.

“It’s so important to share with young people the bond and the patriotism this medal represents,” said Kelley, who serves as president of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. “They need to know that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things. Part of our mission is to foster patriotism and to inspire our youth to be better citizens of our country.”

President Abraham Lincoln created the Medal of Honor in 1861. It is given to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against the enemy of the United States.”

Medtronic provides a strong support network for its military veterans through the company’s Veteran Employee Resource Group (VERG). The group actively explores and creates leadership opportunities within Medtronic for VERG members and also works to raise awareness of the contributions of veterans. VERG is planning a variety of activities in connection with the Medal of Honor convention, including an event involving a Medal of Honor recipient.

Medtronic is among three dozen major corporations helping sponsor the convention. Last year’s convention was held in Boston, Mass.
