MANAGING HEALTHCARE COSTS Risk-Based Contracting & Process Innovation

TAKING ON LUNG CANCER, TOGETHER
Kootenai Health, United States

The Kootenai Health team in Idaho tapped Medtronic technology and expertise to develop a program to detect and treat lung cancer earlier — improving outcomes and and decreasing the disease's economic burden. With support from the Medtronic Impact Program, the Kootenai team was able to:

  • Streamline communications between pathologists, pulmonologists, interventional radiologists, oncologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons
  • Appoint nurse navigators to help guide patients along the journey through treatment
  • Identify ways to screen more people for lung cancer and to capture and track patients at high risk for late-stage detection
  • Diagnose 46 early-stage lung cancer patients in the program's first year

ELEVATING CONSIDERATION OF PATIENT OUTCOMES IN PROCUREMENT STRATEGY
Southlake Regional Health Centre, Ontario

Southlake engaged in competitive dialogue to explore innovative procurement — allowing consideration of:

  • The value of a product or service beyond price
  • Patient outcomes, such as faster recovery time or reduced risk of rehospitalization
  • Device longevity
  • The most appropriate product or service for each individual patient
