Definitions & Resources

Supplier Diversity

Medtronic values diversity in its employees, patients, health care providers and suppliers. A diverse supplier base fosters increased competition and innovation while promoting economic growth within the community.

Medtronic is focusing efforts to ensure the inclusion of qualified, diverse businesses in opportunities to provide goods and services. Diverse suppliers includes certified minority-owned and women-owned businesses and small businesses (certified Small Disadvantaged Businesses, HUBZone, Woman, Veteran-owned/Service Disabled Veteran-owned).

Policy

It is the policy of Medtronic to provide the maximum practical opportunity for the inclusion of qualified small, diverse businesses in the corporation’s subcontracting process.

To facilitate the achievement of its negotiated small business subcontracting goals, Medtronic has instituted a proactive Supplier Diversity Program. Focused efforts will be taken to increase and maintain the involvement of:

Small Business (SB)
Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB)
Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB)
Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB)
Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB)
Historically Underutilized Business Zone Small Business (HUBZone)

Click on any of the above business classifications for a full definition

This will be accomplished by:

  • Facilitating the identification of qualified SB/ WOSB/ SDB/ VOSB/ SDVOSB/ HUBZone Small Businesses for opportunities to provide goods and services.
  • Counseling SB/ WOSB/ SDB/ VOSB/ SDVOSB/ HUBZone Small Businesses with respect to Medtronic procurement procedures and expectations, to enhance their potential participation.
  • Providing opportunities to diverse suppliers that will enhance their skills, resources and expertise to meet the needs of potential purchasers.
  • Maintaining active membership in local, regional and national organizations that support diverse suppliers.
  • Participating in outreach activities that support diverse suppliers.

Supplier Registration

Medtronic identifies diverse suppliers through purchasing organizations, participation in various trade show activities, and utilization of supplier directories/databases. The Medtronic Supplier Registration Portal (MSRP) will further enhance the sourcing of potential diverse suppliers by providing Medtronic buyers with on-line access to detailed supplier capability profiles. This dynamic portal enables buyers to integrate supplier diversity into the normal procurement process and easily access diverse suppliers. A third-party screening process through Diversity Information Resources verifies supplier certification. Potential suppliers must have a D&B D-U-N-S Number, the industry standard for business listings, to register in the Medtronic Supplier Registration Portal (MSRP). In addition, Medtronic purchasing personnel use the Dynamic Small Business Search database (formerly ProNet) to identify small business sources. This database is part of the U.S. Government’s Central Contractor Registration (CCR), which can be found at http://www.ccr.gov/sba.asp. Vendors that wish to sell to the U.S. Government or its prime contractors such as Medtronic are encouraged to register.

Supplier Qualifications

As a prime contractor to the U.S. Government, Medtronic has small business subcontracting goals. If you are a Small Business, Woman-Owned Small Business, Veteran-Owned or Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, you can self certify as to your business size and socio-economic classification. If you wish to be considered as a Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB) or a HUBZone small business you must be certified through the Small Business Administration (SBA). To learn about the eligibility requirements for these programs and how to become certified, please visit http://www.sba.gov/sdb/ and https://eweb1.sba.gov/hubzone/internet/.

Small business size standards are defined by the SBA based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). See the SBA Table of Small Business Size Standards at http://www.sba.gov/size/indextableofsize.html

We also recommend that minority-owned businesses obtain certification through a regional council of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) and that women-owned businesses obtain certification through a local Women Business Enterprise Council (WBENC) affiliate.

Note that certifications are not to be considered as a guarantee of conducting business with Medtronic. Supplier selection is based on several factors, including pricing, delivery capabilities, service, innovation, etc.
