How is BPH diagnosed?

Diagnosis is the first step to finding relief

Before recommending a treatment plan, your doctor will need to find out more about your condition. The most common ways to find out if you have BPH are:

  • AUA Symptom Score Index

A series of questions to rate how much your urinary symptoms are bothering you.

  • Urine flow study

A test where you urinate into a device that measures urine flow rates. A slow flow may suggest BPH.

  • Cystoscopy

Your doctor inserts a small tube through the opening of the penis that allows a view of the urethra and bladder to evaluate any blockage.

  • Ultrasound

A probe is inserted into the rectum, which creates sound waves and forms an image of the prostate on a display screen.

  • Rectal exam

Your doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to find out the size and condition of the prostate.
