In-office treatments

Bridging the gap between drugs and invasive surgery

At some point, you may decide you no longer want to take daily medication, but also do not want to risk the potential side effects of invasive surgery. There are now several treatments that can be done right in your urologist's office. Medicare and most private insurance companies cover in-office procedures.

Transurethral microwave therapy uses microwave energy to heat and destroy excess prostate tissue. The procedure takes about an hour and may require using a catheter for 3 to 14 days. Results vary, depending on the size of the prostate, extent of the blockage, the type of machine and the treatment process the doctor uses. While some patients have good results, others have almost no response to treatment. Side effects also vary widely, but often include blood in the urine short-term.3

PROSTIVA® RF Therapy uses low-level radio frequency energy to destroy excess prostate tissue, allowing you to urinate more normally. Only the part of the prostate that is "squeezing" the urethra is destroyed. The urethra and the rest of the prostate remain intact. The procedure can be done during a single office visit of about an hour (with some additional preparation and recovery time required).6 Most patients do not need a catheter. When needed, the catheter is usually removed within 1-3 days.7, 8 The most common side effects are obstruction (blockage), urinary retention, bleeding, and pain/discomfort.6 Read more about PROSTIVA RF Therapy.
