Being passionate about people development and contributing to advancing people’s careers is why Samir is seen as a true people manager. His full career has been in the area of finance. A few years ago, however, Samir switched to the tracks of setting up the HR shared services center in Heerlen, but eventually he moved back into finance.
Samir lives in Maastricht with his wife and two children.
While Samir joined Medtronic as a finance project manager over ten years ago, he made quite some progress over the years and currently, he is the leader of the Financial Shared Services Center (FSSC) organization.
In my current role, I am overseeing the Financial Shared Service Center (FSSC) organization, which consists of around 250 talented professionals located in Heerlen and Prague. As an internal service provider, we deliver financial & accounting services to mainly the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region – we are the extended team of the local finance organizations.
This is my fourth role in my ten years of service: I started off as a Project manager, became a Purchase to Pay (PtP) service line manager, switched to the role of Senior Business Services manager (overseeing the PtP & Human Resources operations service lines) and ended up in my current role of Shared Services Center Director Finance Operations in Heerlen and Prague.
The biggest challenge is to continuously set the right priorities in order to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Simply put, ensuring that my life doesn’t get in the way of my work and that work doesn’t stop me from having a life.
For me this means collaboration which is focused on the patients and customers: by asking ourselves the question “Are we really contributing to creating value for the patient and customer?” in everything we do. This ranges from cross-functional collaboration to involving key stakeholders e.g. physicians/governments/insurance companies, seeking better ways to ensure that every patient indeed does receive the right therapy. There are still too many people (even in the Netherlands) who do not have access to the proper therapies.
Next to this and although we are not in direct contact with our patients or customers, we do ensure that our customer-facing colleagues can focus on their core activities, so that our patients can receive the proper treatment.
Our annual Patient Event where our patients share how our therapies help to increase their quality of life.
