Bradycardia (Slow Heart Rate)

The standard treatment for a slow heart rate is to implant a pacemaker. For people with bradycardia, this small device can help restore a normal heartbeat.

Pacemakers

If you have bradycardia, you may be eligible for an implantable heart device called a pacemaker. Traditional pacemakers are small devices that are implanted under the skin, most often below your collarbone on the left or right side of your chest. For some patients, a new pacing system with a miniaturized pacemaker and no leads may be appropriate. Talk to your doctor for more information.

A pacemaker contains a battery and computer circuitry in a metal case to correct slow heart rhythms. The pacemaker continuously monitors your heart, and if it detects a slow rhythm problem, it sends out small undetectable electrical signals to correct it. Today's technology lets your doctor monitor and adjust your pacemaker to your specific condition.
