FACTS ON HEAD & NECK SURGERY RISKS
DID YOU KNOW?
As a Health Care Professional you have a strong desire to achieve the best clinical outcome for your patients. This desire is important to you if you are new in the endocrine surgery but of course remains equally important if you spent already many hours operating on the thyroid gland. Intraoperative nerve monitoring is defined to be a helpful tool in this matter.
IONM enhances awareness of NAR and facilitates the identification of nerves with anatomical variants1-9
Intraoperative corrective action to prevent postoperative long-term complications10-11
Alter surgical strategy to reduce the risk of injury10-14
Changes to, or improvements in surgical technique15-18
Significant reductions in postoperative palsies, transient paresis, paralysis or permanent palsies of the RLN or the EBSLN1,2,19-23
The identification rate of NAR has been significantly increased3,4,24
Significantly higher rate of FN preservation25, significantly earlier recovery of facial function26 and significantly reduced postoperative FN paresis27
Safe and reliable adjunct to direct visualization10,11,21,28-33
Adverse events related to an IONM equipment malfunction and negative consequences of vagal activity are uncommon28,33
NIM® NERVE MONITORING SYSTEMS
Based on over 20 years of nerve monitoring experience, Medtronic offers a broad portfolio of head and neck surgery products to help otolaryngologists, endocrine, and general surgeons treat a variety of conditions in adult and pediatric patients.
Our NIM® Nerve Monitoring Systems enable surgeons to identify and confirm motor nerve function and monitor major motor nerves during head and neck surgery, such as thyroidectomies, as well as other procedures. If there is a change in nerve function, the NIM System may provide visual and audible warnings to alert the surgeon. This helps reduce the risk of intraoperative nerve damage, improving safety and peace of mind for both surgeons and patients.
See the device manual for detailed information regarding the instructions for use, indications, contraindications, warnings, precautions, and potential adverse events. For further information, contact your local Medtronic representative and/or consult the Medtronic website at www.medtronic.com.
