THE IMPORTANCE OF MRI FOR PEOPLE WITH
PARKINSON’S
DBS THERAPY FOR PARKINSON’S DISEASE

YOU DESERVE OPTIONS, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

MRI can help guide navigation and confirm lead placement. With Medtronic, you can have the option of a diagnostic post-operative full-body MRI.1

What is MRI?

MRI is short for magnetic resonance imaging and is a non-invasive way to examine organs, tissues, and the skeletal system.

MRI is used to diagnose causes of common medical conditions of heart, brain, and spine.

It produces high-resolution images that help diagnose a variety of problems.

Compared to CT (X-ray), MRI is safer, provides your physician a much better chance of the correct diagnosis, and is now the preferred mode of diagnostic imaging for many disease states, both in terms of guidelines and clinical practice.

7 out of ten people with Parkinson's eligible for DBS Therapy may need an MRI following their implant

The FIRST full body mri conditional portfolio3

Medtronic offers the world's first full-body MRI capable DBS device portfolio. People with Parkinson’s with implanted DBS systems feel reassured knowing that with proper safeguards, MRI is an option for them.

PerceptTM PC neurostimulator is the first and only device to have full-body MR Conditional4 access anywhere on the body for both 1.5T and 3T MRI scans.

Meet Emily

Emily chose to have a Medtronic DBS device implanted. This means if Emily has an accident or an injury, doctors would be able to carry out an MRI to make an accurate diagnosis and best treatment plan for Emily. This is because Medtronic DBS devices have a unique technology that means under specific conditions they can go in an MRI scanner.

Analyses based on Parkinson's disease comorbidities recommended for MRI in Europe, the % was calculated for a real-life Parkinson's disease population potentially eligible for DBS, from US commercial health insurance database (Conroy et al, conference presentation, ECR 2015, Vienna).

Refer to the instructions for use for detailed information regarding the implant procedure, indications, contraindications, warnings, precautions, MRI compatibility of specific Activa® devices, MRI conditional labelling and potential adverse events.

Medtronic DBS systems are MR Conditional, which means they are safe for MRI scans only under certain conditions. If the conditions are not met, the MRI could cause tissue heating, especially at the implanted lead(s) into the brain, which may result in serious and permanent injury or death. Before having an MRI, always talk with the doctor who manages your DBS therapy to determine your eligibility and discuss potential benefits and risks of MRI.
