Your doctor may recommend an insertable heart monitor, also known as a “loop recorder,” if you’re experiencing symptoms that could be related to your heart.

Stroke

Stroke patients are at high risk for atrial fibrillation (AFib), which may lead to another stroke.

Atrial fibrillation management

AFib is a common condition but, if left untreated, it can lead to stroke.

Unexplained fainting

People faint for many reasons, but it can be a sign of an underlying heart condition.

Heart palpitations

Heart palpitations are relatively common, but can be a sign of a more serious heart condition.

Speak to a heart specialist.

If you’re experiencing symptoms that may indicate a heart condition, you may need to speak to a heart doctor (cardiologist) or a special kind of cardiologist known as an electrophysiologist. A cardiologist acts as the “plumber” of the heart and deals with the heart and its blood vessels, while an electrophysiologist acts as the “electrician” of the heart and manages its electrical signals.

Find a doctor.

Cost and insurance coverage

Insertable heart monitors, also known as loop recorders or ICMs, have been available for more than 20 years and are widely covered by Medicare and private providers. Ask your insurance provider for information on coverage for your specific condition and any costs or copays you’d incur for implant or ongoing monitoring with an implanted heart monitor.
