Skin- and nipple-sparing procedures are mastectomy options allowing patients to keep as much of their skin and natural appearance as possible.
During a nipple-sparing mastectomy:
- Your skin, including the nipple and areola, is preserved.
- An incision is most commonly made around the areola or along the crease under your breast.
- Your surgeon removes breast tissue through the small opening they have created.
- The remaining tissue provides the best shape for an implant.
You are an ideal candidate if you: 1
- Do not have tumor cells close to the skin (do not have inflammatory breast cancer).
- Are a non-smoker and have never previously received breast radiation.
- Need a simple (or total) mastectomy or a modified radical mastectomy.
