Martin James is a highly experienced cardiac physiologist with a career spanning over three decades in the field of cardiology and cardiac device technology. His journey in healthcare began in 1988, when he joined Leeds General Infirmary as a student. After qualifying two years later, he continued to serve at Leeds for four years, developing his expertise and dedication to patient care. He then joined Hull NHS Trust, where he worked as the Chief of Pacing, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs), and Electrophysiology (EP) for four years, marking his first leadership role in cardiac pacing and advanced cardiac devices.
In 1998, Martin transitioned into the medical device industry, joining Medtronic as a Technical Consultant (TC), becoming the second person in the country to hold this role. Over his 27 years with Medtronic, Martin has witnessed and contributed to significant advancements in the organization and cardiac rhythm management. His dedication to continual improvement in cardiac care led him to gain his NASPE accreditation in 2000, further cementing his expertise and commitment to his profession.
Martin’s work is deeply motivated by his dedication to improving patients’ lives. He is driven by the knowledge that cardiac devices can greatly relieve symptoms and enhance quality of life for many people, and he finds great purpose in being a part of that process.
Of all the devices Martin has worked with, his favourite is the Gem DR, introduced in 1999 as Medtronic’s first dual-chamber ICD. This device marked a turning point in cardiac technology, integrating features that have become standard in today’s devices, a testament to Medtronic’s innovation in patient care.
Through his remarkable career, Martin has exemplified dedication to patientcentred care, continuous learning, and technological advancement, remaining an invaluable part of Medtronic’s mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life.
Laura Thomas is a highly skilled and dedicated Cardiac Physiologist, with a specialization in cardiac rhythm management (CRM) and a commitment to improving patient lives through innovative therapies. She qualified as a Cardiac Physiologist in 2014 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) from Swansea University. Laura’s career began at the renowned John Radcliffe Hospital, where she honed her expertise and provided exceptional care to patients for six years.
In 2019, Laura achieved BHRS accreditation, further validating her expertise in the field. Her academic background also includes a PGCE, underscoring her dedication to lifelong learning and professional development. Laura transitioned to the medical technology sector in 2020, joining Medtronic, where she has continued to pursue her passion for advancing cardiac care.
Patient care is Laura’s driving motivation. She’s deeply invested in bringing cuttingedge CRM therapies to those who need them, empowering patients with tools that enable them to live fuller, healthier lives.
