LP Shunts Shunt for Hydrocephalus



A lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt diverts cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal space in the lower back to the abdomen. It can be used to treat nonobstructive hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus, elevated intracranial pressure, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).

The shunt is implanted into the spinal space in the lower back. The tubing is tunneled under the skin to the abdomen and inserted into the abdominal cavity.
