"I wondered if I would walk again"

Spine Surgery Gave Imam Hossain His Active Life Back

55-year-old Mr. Imam Hossain, is a government employee and hails from Maludi, Barisal. His troubles began when he was in his late thirties and developed a disturbing back pain. Initially, he didn’t pay much heed to the problem because he was very young and energetic, but as his pain did not subside with passing time, it started affecting his daily life. When he was in his early fifties, it became difficult for him to walk because the pain which was chronic in nature had graduated to intermittent episodes of severe pain. “I had consulted a handful of physicians from different cities and despite being on medication constantly my condition did not improve. The excruciating pain was getting unbearable to live with”, said Mr. Hossain.

After consulting couple of physicians, he was advised to undergo series of screening tests by a Neurosurgeon. Mr. Imam was diagnosed to be at an advanced stage of degenerative disc disease in his lower back and the neurosurgeon instantly knew that his condition could not be treated with medications alone.

Degenerative disc disease is an age-related degeneration of the spine. If untreated this condition can cause de-stabilization of the spine accompanied by pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerves of the lower limbs. This leads to excruciating and continuous back pain which can be debilitating and interfere with a person’s ability to lead a productive life.

On the advice of his treating doctor and after having consulted his family, Mr. Imam got a lumbar spine surgery in March 2018. He has been recovering very well and, to his glee, Mr. Imam is back to his normal life style – which once seemed a far cry from reality.

“I am really happy that the doctors gave me an opportunity to learn more about my condition and the therapy which helped me undergo the procedure. I’m back to my routine and with no lingering back pain. I’m finally at peace”, concluded an elated Mr. Imam.
