Pre-Hospital Patients

Product Solution

When risk is highest, you need accuracy the most. In the pre-hospital/EMS environment, it can be helpful to have a small, lightweight, ergonomic pulse oximetry monitor that is reliable, even in difficult monitoring conditions.([FOOTNOTE=10101937 - Motion, Clinical Protocol 081400-N Rev F-1 - Low Perfusion Testing Nell],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=]) Nellcor hand-held patient monitors incorporate patented Nellcor digital signal processing technology to deliver accurate, reliable SpO2 and pulse rate values even during low perfusion and signal interference, including patient motion.1

Nellcor Portable PM10N SpO2 patient monitoring System

The Nellcor portable PM10N monitor is intended to monitor a broad range of patients in mobile, pre-hospital and EMS enviroments.

  • LoSat expanded accuracy range (60% to 100% SpO2) when used with Nellcor adhesive sensosrs with OxiMax technology.
  • 80 hours of data storage capability.
  • Rugged transport protective cover available for use in the EMS enviroment.

Neonatal Patients

In the United States, about 4,800 (or 11.6 per 10,000) babies are born every year with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD). These babies are at significant risk if this condition goes undiagnosed.([FOOTNOTE=Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pulse Oximetry Screening for Critical Congenital Heart Defects. Available at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/pediatricgenetics/CCHDscreening.html. Walsh, W., Evaluation of pulse oximetry screening in Middle Tennessee: cases for consideration before universal screening. J Perinatol, 2011 Feb. 31(2): p. 125-9.],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=])

Product Solution

CCHD guidelines recommend using motion-tolerant pulse oximeters.

Nellcor™ pulse oximetry monitoring has been shown to be a simple and economical tool to aid healthcare providers in CCHD screening.([FOOTNOTE=NCT01720355 at ClinicalTrials.gov],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=])

They are designed to meet your CCHD screening needs. Medtronic received FDA clearance for a motion-tolerant bedside pulse oximeter portfolio that is also compliant with ISO 80601-2-61 (International Organization for Standardization) standards for pulse oximetry.

A published study revealed an artifact in Masimo pulse oximeters, that increased saturation values of 87-90% by an additional 2%. In CCHD screening, an increase from 89% to 91% could mask some cases of CCHD, resulting in false negative screens with the Masimo pulse oximeters.([FOOTNOTE=Johnston ED, Boyle B, Juszczak E, King A, Brocklehurst P, Stenson BJ. Oxygen targeting in preterm infants using the Masimo SET Radical pulse oximeter. Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed. 2011;96(6):F429-33.],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=])

High Risk Patiens

The high risk patient is not always easily identified. Patients can have a high BMI with sleep apnea, be an immediate or post-op surgery patient, be geriatric, or be at risk for respiratory failure.

Respiratory Compromise: Common, Costly, Deadly

Nearly 30% of post-operative patients and up to 7% of all Medicare patients will suffer from respiratory compromise.([FOOTNOTE=Lee LA, Domino KB. Factors associated with postoperative respiratory depression: from the ASA closed claims analysis. ASA Newsletter. 2013;77(5):34-36.],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=]),([FOOTNOTE=Internal Covidien Studies: Nellcor Technical Staff. A Technology Overview of the Nellcor™ with OxiMax™ Pulse Oximetry System, 2003.],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=]) Evidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a contributing factor in 40% of respiratory depression claims.5

The Respiration Rate* parameter, when used with SpO2, the Nellcor™ Saturation Pattern Detection (SPD) Alert, and Nellcor™ SatSeconds Alarm Management technology, provides a complete assessment of a patient’s oxygenation and respiration. This comprehensive at-a-glance view of a patient’s respiratory status and use of a single sensor allow clinicians to better manage their time and workflow, while supporting the clinicians’ commitment to better patient care and faster recovery.

Low Saturation and Low Perfusion Patients

Because you need accuracy the most when risk is highest, the LoSat expanded accuracy feature in Nellcor™ adhesive sensors offer clinicians the ability to monitor patients confidently with accurate and non-invasive pulse oximetry in the lower SpO2 ranges.6

Product Solution

When used with Nellcor™ pulse oximeters, Nellcor™ SpO2 adhesive sensors that feature LoSat technology help ensure accuracy in challenging conditions.

This offers clinicians:

  • Accurate SpO2 tracking in low saturation conditions: 60%-80% SpO2
  • Improved oxygenation assessment for patients with challenging conditions.

Sensor Choice

It is important to apply the sensor to the patient first to speed response time to post accurate data. Applying the sensor first can help reduce the monitor response to motion, light, or electrical interference([FOOTNOTE=Saraswat A, Simionato LK, Dawson JA, Thio M, Kamlin O, Owen L, et al. Determining the best method for Nellcor pulse oximeter sensor application. Acta Paediatr. 2011;10:1-4.],[ANCHOR=],[LINK=])

Nellcor™ pulse oximetry sensors are available in a wide array of options: reusable, adhesive and non-adhesive. Non-adhesive sensors can be used for neonates and patients with sensitive skin. When a patient is in respiratory distress and SpOis lower than 80%, accurate, real-time information is crucial. Used with Nellcor™ pulse oximeters, the Nellcor™ forehead SpOsensor may detect hypoxemic events faster than other sensors.([FOOTNOTE=Saraswat A, Simionato LK, Dawson JA, Thio M, Kamlin O, Owen L, et al. Nellcor™ non-adhesive sensors detect hypoxemic events 90 seconds faster([FOOTNOTE=Bebout DE, Mannheimer PD, Wun C-C.
