PRODUCT QUALITY CITIZENSHIP

WORKING TOGETHER — SHARED ACCOUNTABILITY FOR PRODUCT QUALITY

Patients rely on Medtronic products to be safe and effective. We take their trust seriously. As we continue to deliver innovative new treatments and therapies, our commitment to quality remains our top priority.

Quality is a cornerstone of the Medtronic Mission, written in 1960. Nearly six decades later, the Medtronic global quality strategy continues to ensure that quality and a commitment to patient safety are evident in every aspect of the company’s work. It informs the Medtronic business strategy in therapy innovation, globalization, and economic value, and guides global teams when they interact with customers, collaborators, regulators, and one another.

We expect all employees to monitor product quality at each stage in our value chain — design, manufacturing, pre-clinical and clinical trials, and post-market surveillance. Through our “Quality Begins with Me” culture, all Medtronic employees own this responsibility. We share four fundamental expectations through ongoing communication and training, so that every Medtronic employee knows quality is nonnegotiable:

  • Put the patient first
  • Be courageous
  • Strive to prevent issues before they arise
  • Hold each other accountable

PRODUCT QUALITY — Fiscal Year 2019 (FY19) HIGHLIGHTS

Our global quality strategy guides us to take a rigorous approach to safety and reliability along the product lifecycle. In FY19 Medtronic:

  • Conducted 50 quality culture assessments across 4 global business units and established a baseline Quality Culture Index.
  • Costed 156 Quality Day events across Medtronic campuses globally to strengthen quality behaviors and goals.
  • Transitioned all Medtronic manufacturing sites to use First Time Quality methodology, which teaches employees to see potential errors, develop controls, and identify where improvements can have the biggest impact.
  • Employed more than 2,000 clinical employees worked to ensure our clinical trials are undertaken ethically and effectively. These trials are a critical part of quality control.
  • Developed a “Quality Begins with Me 2.0” assessment model that will pilot at three sites in FY20. This pilot model will help us better understand the underlying causes of quality scores, evaluate year-over-year improvement, and allow greater flexibility to tailor assessments to specific needs and challenges.
