BLADDER AND BOWEL THERAPY

Frequently asked questions

Below are answers to frequently asked questions. The information on this site should not be used as a substitute for talking with your doctor.

What is Medtronic Bladder and Bowel therapy delivered by the InterStim™ system?

This therapy uses a small implanted medical device (neurostimulator and lead) to send mild electrical impulses to nerves that control your bladder and bowel. It may help restore communication between the brain and bladder.1,2,3

What is the difference between InterStim X™ and InterStim™ Micro systems?

The InterStim™ X system is a recharge-free device, while the InterStim™ Micro system is rechargeable. Both therapies deliver stimulation to the sacral nerves.

What does stimulation feel like?

Most people describe stimulation as slight pulling, tingling or a fluttering sensation in the pelvic area. The stimulation is always adjustable, and should not be painful. If you’re getting symptom relief but don’t feel the stimulation, there is no need to adjust the stimulation.

What should I do if I am no longer getting relief?

Use your programmer to make sure your neurostimulator is on. Increase stimulation as directed by your healthcare professional, if needed. If after 3 weeks you are not satisfied with your clinical response, keep a bladder/ bowel diary for 3 days then progress to your next program only as directed by your healthcare professional. If your symptoms don’t improve, follow up with your healthcare professional for further investigation.

What are the potential side effects or complications?

Choosing an InterStim™ system has risks similar to any surgical procedure, including swelling, bruising, bleeding and infection. Talk to your physician about ways to minimise these risks.

Will I be able to get an MRI with the InterStim™ systems?

Yes, but it depends on which system you have:

  • If you have InterStim™ II, InterStim X™ or InterStim™ Micro with SureScan™ MRI leads, you can have a 1.5T or 3T full-body conditional MRI, meaning you can have the full-body scan under certain conditions.
  • If you have an earlier version of the InterStim™ system with previous lead, you can have a head-only MRI scan under specific conditions.

Consult your My Therapy app for MRI eligibility information, and talk to the physician for more details about getting an MRI based on the InterStim™ system you have received. A link to the MRI guidelines can be found here: https://manuals.medtronic.com/manuals/main/en_AU/home/index

Can I have an MRI while undergoing a trial?

If you are currently undergoing a trial with an external neurostimulator, you are not eligible for an MRI. Not following the specific conditions can cause damage to your device and also serious injury to your body.

Will medical tests affect my therapy?

Most routine medical tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, and diagnostic ultrasounds, should not affect your therapy. Any technical questions relating to your InterStim™ System can be directed to your physician or to the Medtronic Technical Support Line on 1800 652 972.

How often should I visit my healthcare professional to discuss my therapy?

Most people visit their specialist at least once a year to discuss their progress and make sure everything is working properly. Talk to your healthcare professional to set up a schedule that works for you.

What if I lose one of my therapy accessories or programmer?

Contact your physician or the Medtronic Technical Support Line on 1800 652 972.
