DUBLIN – March 25, 2021 – Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT), the global leader in medical technology, today announced that the World Economic Forum (WEF) has named the Dutch Diabetes Centre Diabeter as one of the Global Examples for innovative value-driven care. The WEF awarded this title to Diabeter as being one of 'the most advanced and impactful initiatives, demonstrating leadership in accelerating value-based healthcare globally'.
Focus on Outcome for the Patient
For Diabeter, the title is a recognition of the concept that the founders, in collaboration with Medtronic, have built in recent years on the six pillars of value-driven care, or Value Based Healthcare (VBHC). A better outcome for the patient is the goal. In the case of diabetes, that goal is a life without the notorious complications and therefore with a high quality of life. Because Diabeter provides care according to the VBHC principles, and focuses entirely on the outcome for the patients, this leads to less suffering and lower costs. This is based on data and analyses that are always transparent to all care providers, as well as to the patients.
A Future Without Complications for Patients
Henk-Jan Aanstoot, co-founder of Diabeter and pediatrician, is pleased with the WEF's appointment, and sees in his daily practice that Diabeter's value-driven approach makes a future without complications feasible and affordable for patients.
"We use data in combination with state-of-the-art technology. This not only allows us to easily keep in touch with our patients and identify trends early on. It also allows us to prevent complications and, where possible, to apply eHealth,” said Mr. Aanstoot. “And that is absolutely necessary. Too many people with diabetes still suffer from complications."
Inspiration for Other Forms of Care Around the World
"This way of providing care, leads to the best results for the patient first and foremost, and has now also led to this recognition by the WEF,” said Maarten Akkerman, senior director, Medical Affairs & VBHC North West Europe at Medtronic and board member of Diabeter. “Now that Diabeter has been selected as an international example of innovative care for the next two years, we can also inspire other care providers the world."
In the Netherlands, the value-driven approach of Diabeter is now also acknowledged by health insurers and rewarded with long term open volume contracts. A ten-year contract has been signed with healthcare insurer Zilveren Kruis, and agreements have also been reached with CZ and other insurers.
Accelerating the Transition to Value-Driven Care Systems
The World Economic Forum is the international not-for-profit organisation for private-public cooperation. Among other things, they organize the well-known Davos meeting every year, where some 2,500 international politicians, captains of industry, economists and also people from the world of culture discuss solutions for the world.
The Global Innovation Hub stems from the WEF Global Coalition for Value in Healthcare and was established as a place where successful and mature value-driven healthcare is a model for new initiatives to help improve healthcare in many parts of the world, make it accessible to all and keep it there. The World Economic's Global Coalition for Value in Healthcare has selected four value-based healthcare innovation hubs in the Netherlands, Portugal, Wales and Denmark.
The community these hubs form will serve as a collaborative platform to accelerate the shift to value-based healthcare systems around the world.
