INCONTINENCE

Sacral Neuromodulation

Sacral neuromodulation is a surgical procedure that is indicated to treat bladder and bowel incontinence.

Take the symptom quiz

Sacral neuromodulation uses a small implanted medical device that sends mild electrical impulses to nerves that control your bladder and bowel. This therapy may help to restore communication between the brain and the bladder/bowel.

How does SNM work Graphic

How does sacral neuromodulation work?

Sacral neuromodulation uses a small neurostimulator, similar to a pacemaker, which is implanted just beneath the skin in the upper buttock. The neurostimulator is connected to a thin, insulated wire called a lead. It delivers mild electrical impulses to the sacral nerves near the tailbone, helping improve communication between the brain, bladder and bowel. This may improve bladder or bowel control and reduce symptoms of incontinence.¹⁻³
