Medtronic has a global reach that extends to more than 150 countries. In the Netherlands, Medtronic employs over 3,000 employees in
five facilities, including our European Operations Center for Distribution and Shared Services and Service & Repair Center of Excellence in Heerlen, the Bakken Research Center in Maastricht, our Cardiac Surgery manufacturing facility in Kerkrade, and the Dutch sales office in Eindhoven.
Medtronic has had one or more facilities in the province of Limburg since 1969. In that year, the founder and former CEO of Medtronic, Earl Bakken, chose Kerkrade as the city for Europe's first facility and base for Medtronic's activities. Today, Medtronic is still well represented in the Netherlands, and this year, we celebrate the fact that Medtronic has already been in the Netherlands for 50 years.
The Dutch sales organization (Medtronic Trading NL B.V.) is located in Eindhoven. All Medtronic businesses are represented in this organization:
The total number of people working at Medtronic Trading NL equals approximately 230 employees.
The European Operations Center (EOC) in Heerlen hosts various functions, spread across two facilities. The EOC facility at the Trilandis business park houses Europe's Information Technology Service, the Financial Shared Service Center and Medtronic's largest international distribution facility for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). As of October 2017, a new distribution center of 33,000 m² has been added, ensuring that 15,000 hospitals and clinics in Europe can be reached within 24 hours. Around 1,100 people of about 49 nationalities work at Medtronic in Heerlen; this turns Medtronic into one of the largest employers in this region.
At the C-mill business park facility in Heerlen, the Service & Repair Center of Excellence is located, responsible for the end-to-end (corrective and preventive) servicing of small capital equipment for all Medtronic therapy groups. From December 2015 until October 2017, multiple service centers in Western Europe have been centralized in this location, resulting in a team of approximately 160 dedicated and motivated employees who are delivering a service of the highest possible standard to our customers.
In 1987, Medtronic founded the Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht with 45 employees. Today, that number has grown to more than 400 international talents of 35 different nationalities.
BRC is unique due to the multiple specialties and expertise concentrated at one location – which stimulates cross-fertilization and collaboration. Multiple business units work together at Medtronic BRC, enabling the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
BRC is one of the largest Medtronic R&D campuses outside the United States. In recent years, BRC has been at the forefront of key medical device innovations such as dual-chamber pacemakers, sacral neuromodulation, cardiac resynchronization therapy and deep brain stimulation. The Bakken Research Center excels in therapy innovation, clinical and economic evidence, regulatory approval and translations..More information about BRC
