If you have high blood pressure that remains above target despite treatment, your doctor may discuss additional options with you. One option that may be considered for some patients is the renal denervation blood pressure procedure, also known as renal denervation or RDN.1
Renal denervation is a minimally invasive procedure that targets nerves near the arteries leading to the kidneys. These nerves can play a role in blood pressure regulation.2
The renal denervation blood pressure procedure uses a small catheter to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy to these nerves. This treatment is intended to reduce nerve activity that may be contributing to high blood pressure.2
This procedure may help lower blood pressure in some patients. It may not be suitable for everyone. Your doctor can advise whether it may be appropriate for you.1,3

During the procedure, a doctor inserts a small, flexible tube called a catheter through a blood vessel, usually in the leg, and guides it to the arteries near the kidneys.2,4
The catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the treatment area. The goal is to disrupt nerve signals that may contribute to high blood pressure.2
The procedure is minimally invasive and is typically performed in a hospital or outpatient setting.2,4
After treatment, you will be monitored for a period of time before going home. Your healthcare team will give you advice about recovery, activity, and follow-up care.4,5
Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days, depending on their doctor's advice.5
The renal denervation blood pressure procedure may help lower blood pressure in some patients, particularly where medication and lifestyle changes have not been enough on their own.1,3
Lowering blood pressure may help reduce the risk of serious health problems associated with hypertension. However, results vary from person to person, and not all patients will have the same response.1,3

After the procedure, you will usually have follow-up appointments to monitor your blood pressure and overall health.5
It is important to continue taking your prescribed blood pressure medicines unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You should also follow all instructions from your healthcare team after the procedure.5
You will usually receive a local anaesthetic to numb the area where the catheter is inserted. Most patients remain awake during the procedure. The procedure usually takes about an hour.4
