Shunts typically consist of two catheters and a valve that redirect excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body. Implanting our shunts usually takes less than an hour, and may help relieve symptoms of hydrocephalus.

There's no cure for hydrocephalus, but there is a treatment: implanting a shunt to drain excess fluid from the brain.
Shunt implantation lets people with hydrocephalus enjoy more normal lives. Like any surgery, however, the procedure carries certain risks.
