Recent Medtronic research reveals a reduction in sensor-detected severe hypoglycemia among InPenTM Smart Insulin Pen users

At the 21st Annual Diabetes Technology Meeting held virtually November 4-6, Medtronic Diabetes presented data that shows a reduction in sensor-detected severe hypoglycemia among users of the InPen Smart* Insulin Pen system. The presentation also included an analysis of the projected cost savings associated with the observed reduction in sensor-detected severe hypoglycemia.

Albert Chien, MA, MPH, conducted an analysis of 1,681 pediatric and adult InPen users who were also using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). All users were required to have at least 90 days of InPen use with a connected CGM. The occurrence of sensor-detected severe hypoglycemia during a two-week period prior to the start InPen was compared to a two-week period after the start of InPen use. Sensor-detected severe hypoglycemia events were defined as ≥10 minutes of consecutive sensor glucose readings < 54 mg/dL. To complete the cost savings analysis, medical intervention rates and costs associated with intervention were obtained from the literature.1-8

Results of this analysis revealed a 13% reduction in sensor-detected severe hypoglycemic events, from 2.90 to 2.52 average events per month, a statistically significant change (p=0.008). Reduction in these sensor-detected events has the potential to reduce annual health care costs for InPen users.
